Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement: The Irvine Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Clopay-compatible torsion springs on our trucks, and in Irvine a full spring replacement typically runs $180-$340 installed, parts and labor included. Most Clopay owners in Irvine discover the spring failed the hard way: a loud bang from the garage, the door won’t lift more than a few inches, or the opener strains and groans against a door that suddenly weighs what it actually weighs without spring help. If your Clopay door is stuck shut with your car inside, call (949) 810-7259 and we’ll get there same day.

Which Clopay Models This Applies To

Clopay builds residential doors across several lines and the torsion spring setup varies by series. The Classic wood and steel lines, the Gallery collection, the Coachman and Reserve faux-wood doors, and the entry-level Ideal and Intro line all use torsion systems, but the spring wire gauge, inside diameter, length, and wind direction differ from model to model. A spring from a 16×7 Coachman should not go on a 9×7 Classic; the spring was wound for a different door weight, and the wrong spring turns the opener into a question mark. On Clopay specifically, the spring ID is most commonly 1.75″ or 2″, and the wire gauge runs from .207 up to .375 on heavier doors, but the spring tag or stamp on the winding cone tells you the actual spec. If the tag is gone, one of us will measure the old spring and match it. We install OEM Clopay springs when the job calls for it, and we also carry quality aftermarket equivalents that match the exact spring rate and cycle rating, because OEM markup isn’t always worth it on a wear part. This is a good time to say it plainly: Otto’s Garage Door is an independent service provider, not affiliated with the Clopay brand, and we repair all their models from years of hands-on work, not from a franchise playbook.

Signs Your Clopay Torsion Spring Replacement Is Failing

  • The door won’t lift past a foot, or won’t lift at all. The spring is carrying all the door weight, and when it snaps the door drops to dead weight. If the opener is still trying, it’s now fighting gravity alone.
  • A loud bang from the garage in the night. That’s the spring letting go. It sounds like a truck backed into the wall. A 200-pound door riding on two springs respects no one; when one fails, the failure announces itself.
  • Visible gap in the spring coil. Look up at the torsion tube and you’ll see the spring is no longer one continuous coil. A one or two inch separation means it snapped clean through.
  • The opener runs but the door barely moves, and the motor sounds strained. If the opener is straining, the problem is almost never the opener. The spring is done and the opener is being asked to do a job it was never built for.
  • Cables are slack on one side or hanging loose. When the spring fails, the tension goes out of the cables. If you see cable droop, the spring above it is the cause, not the cable.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Irvine, Clopay torsion spring replacement runs $180-$340 installed. The spread comes from door weight and spring spec: a single spring on a 7-foot door is at the lower end, a pair of high-cycle springs on a 16-foot door runs toward the top. Here’s what that price covers in our shop:

  • Both springs replaced as a pair (replacing only the broken one leaves the other spring at the end of its life and costs you a second trip charge later)
  • Springs matched to your Clopay door weight, not guesstimated
  • Labor, winding, and balance testing of the door
  • Lubrication of rollers, hinges, and bearings so the new spring cycles smooth
  • Our 90-Day Done Right Promise in writing on the invoice

I count spring cycles the way you count tire miles. Most standard springs on an Irvine home are rated for 10,000 cycles; if you open the door three times a day, that’s about nine years. If your house was built in 2015 and the door still has its original springs, the birthday is coming. The price we quote on the phone is the price on the invoice; it does not change between the driveway and the job. One call to Otto brings the owner back, not a callback queue.

DIY or Call Us?

Spring replacement is the one job we tell everyone to skip doing themselves, and not because we want the work. A torsion spring is wound under enough tension to take a finger off or put a winding bar through a wall. The honest split: you can safely check the spring for a visible gap, read the rating tag if it’s still there, and confirm the door won’t balance. What you shouldn’t do is unbolt the winding cone without experience, and winding a new spring to the correct tension is not a job to learn from a video. We’ve been winding springs since Otto learned the trade at Los Angeles Trade-Tech, and even now we treat every spring like it’s the first one. Call (949) 810-7259 and we’ll match the spring, install it, and balance the door the same day. A door is 200 pounds riding on two springs. Respect it.
